The Daintree Rainforest: Cape Tribulation

After leaving the actual rainforest, we drove to Cape Tribulation. Cape Tribulation was named by Captain Cook who sailed on his ship, The Endeavour and as Greg pointed out, it speaks to his state of mind as he landed on the eastern coast of Australia.

When Captain Cook left New Zealand and headed west into uncharted territory, he hit the Great Barrier Reef and and became stuck in low tide. The front bottom of the hull was now a giant hole and so he had to act quickly. He threw overboard all perishable food items as well as his cannons and used a sail to make a bandaid to stop the water from coming in. Then, he waited until high tide and was able to get off the reef and look for a suitable location to land the ship and make repairs. Hence, he gave the unsuitable areas he passed names such as Weary Bay, Cape Tribulation, Hope Island, etc... He eventually found a river mouth where he navigated the ship and landed it to make repairs. He called it Endeavour River. They were there for months and over time, Captain Cook developed a repoire with the local Aboriginal people and learned about the flora and fauna of the area. The story goes that when he and his men saw hopping animals they asked the local people what they were called. The local people said something like kangaroo, which means "What the @#$% is he talking about?" Captain Cook took that to be the name of the creature we now call the kangaroo. Anyhow, Captain Cook and his crew eventually made it back to England and that is how the First Fleet came later to land on Australia's Coast.

Where's Jacob? In the mangroves of course!

Cape Tribulation is a breathtaking shallow beach lined with mangroves and coconut trees. Apparently, you can walk out for 200 metres and the water will only be at your waist. We didn't have time to frolic though as we had to get to our next stop: LUNCH!

After visiting Cape Tribulation, we headed back to the Cafe in the Rainforest for a scrumptious lunch before making our way to our Crocodile riverboat tour.
